The National Park Service yesterday announced its peak bloom prediction: March 27-30. This coincides perfectly with my favorite kid-friendly National Cherry Blossom Festival Event: the Blossom Kite Festival, set for Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on the grounds of the National Mall. Note that NPS’s prediction may change as the bloom gets closer.

At the Blossom Kite Festival, you can take in the awesome sight of kites filling the sky around the Washington Monument. It’s also a pretty chill event, with plenty of space toward the Capitol side of the Mall to lounge, picnic and play with your family.
Here are the best kid-friendly and free National Cherry Blossom Festival events to plan for:
- Saturday, March 21: Smithsonian American Art Museum Cherry Blossom Celebration, an event featuring music, face painting, cherry blossom crafts, and an art scavenger hunt.
- Saturday, April 4: National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, a grand parade on Constitution Avenue.
- Saturday, April 11: Petalpalooza, a full day of music and fun at the Capitol Riverfront.
